Consider Yourself Lucky to have a Mobile

Here in the developed west nearly everyone now has a moble phone. We should all be aware that around half of the worlds population will have never made or received a telephone call.

This highlights how lucky we are to have access to affordable telecommunications and the technological gap that exists between the developed countries and those in the developing world.

But many would argue that, while mobile phones can be enormously useful, they can also be incredibly irritating. Have you used a bus or a train lately?

I have to take the train to and from London every day and I find myself forced to listen to mobile conversations that I would far rather not hear. On my homeward journey I regularly listen to people calling their partners just to tell them: 'I'm on the train'. And every evening I have to listen to the same people making the same calls with the same useless message. What did they do before they had a mobile phone?

I'm also forced to listen to the inane conversations of teenagers that make no sense whatsoever. Their conversations seem to be focused on their boring lives, the television programmes they've been watching or criticising their boyfriends. In one recent conversation a young lady loudly shared the details of a recent sexual experience with a detailed account of what took place. As she proceeded to describe exactly what had taken place everyone in the train compartment was cringing with embarassment.

Forcing other people to listen to one side of your telephone conversation is just one aspect of modern mobile phone use that is incredibly annoying. Another is people's choice of annoyingly irritating ring tones and yet another is playing music loudly without consideration for others.

Everyone needs to be reminded of how lucky they are to own a mobile phone. Owning a mobile phone is not a god given right, it's a privelige that should not be provided to people who use it to describe their sex lives, loudly.
